That's So...?

I saw this poster on Pinterest today and I think it would be great to have in the classroom! Not only does it raise awareness about Homophobic bullying but it challenges students to think about the implications of what they are saying and expand their vocabulary!

    I agree with you Courtney! We often do not think sometimes of the words that come out of our mouths and the consequences it may have by saying them. My cousin is gay and I remember when I was younger my grandma having to tell me to not use gay in a "that's so lame" way. I never really realized how much I used the word until I had to watch what I was saying. I think it is important to help raise awareness with children about these topics and show them that when they use a certain word in a derogatory way it can hurt someone else's feelings.

      What I struggle with is helping kids, especially ones in their teens, the impact of the things they say. My younger siblings often say things like "that's so gay" or "that's retarded" and when I ask them to think about what they are saying they often laugh or say soothing even worse than their original statement. I am hoping this has more to do with the fact that they are my siblings than my inability to help them see how harmful words can be.
